Goal 2 – Design and develop effective and engaging learning experiences, environments, resources, and assessments
Example 1: The artifact that I have included to demonstrate my abilities within Goal 2 is a webquest that I created, called This Planet Really Rocks. I use this webquest to teach my students about the rock cycle. While students work through it, they view panoramas and diagrams, participate in interactives, complete checks for understanding, and produce a written product. This artifact meets Goal 2 because it shows how I can use what I know about facilitating learning in an online environment to create a learning experience using digital tools that is both engaging and interactive. Also, because I have included extensions for further investigation and a wide range of activities throughout the webquest, it shows that I consider my students’ varying abilities and preferred learning styles when designing learning experiences. Example 2: This artifact is a wiki that I created, which is a compilation of different Web 2.0 technologies that can be used to engage students while learning science. In this online learning space, students will examine how certain web technologies are being used today in the science field by describing and analyzing examples that I will provide for them. Then, they will replicate its use using the same type of Web 2.0 tool to collaborate about what we are learning in our own science classroom. I have also created and included various modes for assessment, to ensure that learners are receiving meaningful feedback frequently. This artifact meets Goal 2 because it shows that I can design and develop learning experiences centered around the use of emerging technologies in an online environment, and can create all necessary resources and assessments to support this learning. Example 3: This artifact is a webquest that I created for students, which I upload to my class blog each year before it is about to be used. This webquest centers around the controversial idea of animal experimentation. During this webquest, students play the role of a lawyer. Their supervisor, the teacher, assigns them a job. They either represent animals (against animal testing) or humanity (supporter of animal testing) in a case of animal experimentation. Then, students work in groups to research their given side of the issue, and find information that either supports the necessity of animal testing, or proves that animal experimentation is inhumane and that alternatives would work just as well. Once they have their information, they use a digital tool of their choice to create a presentation of their side of the debate, which they present to the “jury.” A live debate should ensue after lawyers from both sides have stated their case. This artifact meets Goal 2 because it shows that I can design and develop an engaging learning experience, which centers around the use of digital tools and online resources, that will teach kids a necessary 21st century skill.
